Borasu Pass Trek

The Kinnaur approach to Borasu Pass begins with a drive from Sangla up the Baspa valley to Chitkul, the last motorable village before the road ends at the sensitive border area beyond, and the journey itself offers dramatic views of the Baspa river carving through dense pine and deodar forest below successive ridgelines. On arrival, the group takes a short orientation walk through Chitkul's distinctive wooden houses and past the Mathi temple, dedicated to the local goddess and considered one of the most important religious sites in the upper Baspa valley, its carved wooden facade weathered by generations of harsh winters. Beyond the village, meadows stretch toward the river, and grazing horses and yaks are a common sight against a backdrop of high peaks that mark the direction the trek will take over the coming week toward the Uttarakhand border. Locals in Chitkul, accustomed to occasional trekking groups attempting the Borasu crossing from this Kinnaur side rather than the more commonly used Uttarakhand approach via Har Ki Dun, are often a useful source of current information on trail and weather conditions further up the valley. The evening is spent settling into a village guesthouse, a comfortable base before the trek moves into more remote terrain, and the guide typically uses dinner to outline the specific route this itinerary follows, tracing the border valley beyond Chitkul toward a high camp and eventual crossing into Uttarakhand's Har Ki Dun region, a route walked by relatively few compared to treks approaching Borasu from the opposite direction.

Beyond Chitkul, the trail follows the Baspa river into territory rarely visited outside of grazing families and the occasional border patrol, the forest cover thinning gradually as the valley narrows and climbs toward its glacial source. This stretch has a genuinely wild, untouched character, with the river running clear and cold beside the trail and steep, forested slopes rising on either side toward peaks that remain largely unnamed on standard trekking maps. Kinnauri shepherds graze sheep and goats on the meadows here through the summer months, and their seasonal stone shelters, simple but effective against the region's harsh weather, provide the only signs of human presence for long stretches of the walk. Wildlife is relatively abundant given how little foot traffic this valley sees compared to more popular Himachal trekking corridors, and blue sheep are occasionally spotted on distant crags, while golden eagles are a regular sight riding thermals along the ridgelines above. Dumti camp, set on a grassy shelf beside the river, offers a peaceful, remote setting with clear views up-valley toward the high terrain the trek will approach more closely over the coming days. The relative solitude of this route, compared to the well-trodden Har Ki Dun side of Borasu Pass, is something guides frequently highlight as one of the itinerary's distinguishing features, offering a genuine sense of venturing into rarely walked Kinnaur border country. Apart from the guide team and the occasional distant shepherd, the group sees no other travelers all day, a solitude that feels increasingly rare on Himachal's better-known routes.
