Brahmatal Trek

The Brahmatal trek, best known as a winter and early-spring route offering some of Uttarakhand's most reliable snow trekking, begins at Lohajung and climbs immediately into forest, distinguishing itself from the neighbouring Ali Bedni Bugyal and Roopkund trails by heading in a different direction along the ridge system entirely. The trail winds through oak and rhododendron, gaining height steadily through a forest that, in winter, is often blanketed in snow from the very first hour, transforming what would otherwise be a straightforward walk into a genuinely wintry Himalayan experience distinct from the summer meadow-trekking character of routes elsewhere in this district. Bekaltal, the day's destination, is a small forest-fringed lake tucked into a natural basin, its water often partially frozen through the peak winter months and, according to local legend, home to a mythical serpent deity that villagers traditionally sought blessings from before undertaking journeys into the higher mountains. The lake's setting, ringed by tall conifers rather than open grassland, gives this trek an immediately different visual character from the broad bugyals found on nearby routes, favouring an intimate, forested atmosphere over expansive meadow views in its early stages. Camp beside Bekaltal offers a quiet, sheltered first night, snow-muffled if conditions are wintry, and guides use the evening to explain how the trek's character will shift dramatically over the coming days as the trail climbs above the treeline toward Brahmatal's open lake and, eventually, views of Trishul and Nanda Ghunti that rival anything found on the region's more famous meadow treks.

According to local mythology, the lake is associated with Lord Brahma, and a modest, weathered shrine near its edge draws quiet reverence from passing shepherds and guides alike, adding cultural texture to a trek otherwise defined by its striking winter scenery. Camp is pitched close to the frozen lake, and the cold here, particularly at night, is sharp and immediate, snow squeaking underfoot and breath visibly clouding in torchlight, giving this camp a distinctly different sensory character from anything experienced on the neighbouring bugyal-focused treks.
