Churdhar Peak Trek

The Churdhar climb begins at Nohradhar, a small roadhead town in the Sirmaur hills that serves as the traditional starting point for this pilgrimage-trek to Himachal's highest point in the district. From the very first steps, the trail enters a dense forest of oak and rhododendron, the canopy thick enough to filter sunlight into dappled patches even at midday, and the path itself, worn smooth by generations of pilgrim and shepherd feet, climbs in a series of manageable switchbacks rather than any single punishing gradient. Langurs are a near-constant presence in the upper canopy here, their movement through the branches often the first sign of wildlife before any visual confirmation, and the forest floor is thick with fallen oak leaves that give the ground a soft, springy quality underfoot. As height is gained, oak gradually cedes ground to denser stands of rhododendron, spectacular with bloom in the late spring window, their gnarled, moss-covered trunks lending the forest an almost fairy-tale atmosphere on misty mornings, which are common in this part of Sirmaur even in otherwise clear weather. Taevi Dhar, the day's destination, is a forest clearing used as the standard midway camp for the Churdhar pilgrimage, offering the first real views back down toward the Sirmaur valley and, on clear evenings, distant glimpses of the plains beyond the hills. The camp has a basic forest rest house alongside space for tents, and pilgrims making the same journey, often in small family groups, are commonly encountered here, lending the evening a sociable, devotional atmosphere distinct from purely recreational treks elsewhere in Himachal. Dinner conversation typically turns to the temple awaiting at the summit and the local reverence for Churdhar as one of Sirmaur's most sacred peaks.

The second day delivers the trek's central purpose, climbing steadily out of the forest belt and onto Churdhar's increasingly open upper slopes, where the vegetation thins into alpine scrub and finally bare rock as the ridge narrows toward the summit. At just under 12,000 feet, Churdhar stands as the highest point in Sirmaur district, and the final approach rewards the climb with sweeping views that, on a clear day, extend toward the snow-capped ranges of inner Himachal to the north and the hazy expanse of the Shivalik foothills and plains to the south. The summit itself is home to the temple of Shirgul Devta, regarded locally as one of the most powerful deities in this part of the state, and the shrine, though modest in physical scale, draws a steady stream of devotees throughout the trekking season who undertake the climb specifically for darshan rather than recreation. According to local belief, the deity's blessing extends particularly to matters of justice and disputes, and pilgrims often share stories of resolved conflicts attributed to a visit here. After spending time at the temple, absorbing both the panoramic views and the unmistakably devotional atmosphere of the summit, the group begins a descent that trades the steep upper approach for a gentler forested route down to Dev Ghati, a quieter camp lower on the mountain's far flank, chosen to shorten the following day's walk back to Nohradhar. This descent passes through forest noticeably different in character from the ascent route, with more fir mixed among the oak, and the shift in camp location for the night gives trekkers a broader sense of Churdhar's full circumference rather than a simple there-and-back walk. Evening at Dev Ghati is peaceful, with clear skies here often affording an exceptional view of stars away from any settlement light.
