Dhankar Lake Trek

The walk to Dhankar Lake begins at one of Spiti's most striking landmarks, the Dhankar monastery, perched dramatically on a narrow spur of eroded rock high above the confluence of the Spiti and Pin rivers, its whitewashed walls and prayer flags visible from a considerable distance across the valley. After a visit to the monastery itself, home to a small community of monks and a collection of centuries-old Buddhist manuscripts and statues, the trail climbs steeply behind the complex, following a well-worn path that switches back repeatedly up an exposed, barren slope with essentially no shade for the duration of the climb. The gradient is genuinely demanding for such a short distance, and the combination of thin air and intense, unfiltered sun typical of Spiti's high-altitude desert climate makes an early start and steady pacing far more important than the modest overall distance might suggest. As the trail crests the final ridge, Dhankar Lake appears with little warning, a small, still body of intensely turquoise water set in a barren, rocky bowl entirely without vegetation, its colour appearing almost impossibly vivid against the surrounding grey and ochre rock. The lake holds genuine religious significance for local Buddhist communities, and prayer flags strung around its edge reflect the steady stream of pilgrims and trekkers who make this same short but demanding climb throughout the trekking season. From the lake's edge, views extend back across the Spiti valley and toward Dhankar monastery below, offering a genuinely different perspective on the same landmark seen from the road earlier in the day. After time spent absorbing the lake's stark beauty, the group descends the same steep trail back to the monastery, the return leg considerably faster but still demanding careful footing on the loose, dusty surface underfoot.
