Gurson Bugyal Trek

The trail sets off from Auli's ski slopes and climbs through a forest of deodar and silver fir, the gradient gentle enough that most reasonably fit walkers manage it without difficulty, and the canopy provides welcome shade for much of the ascent. Within roughly ninety minutes, the trees begin thinning into scattered clearings, and the trail soon breaks fully onto Gurson Bugyal, a broad, gently sloping meadow whose grass, thick and springy underfoot through the summer and monsoon months, rolls away toward a horizon dominated by Nanda Devi's unmistakable double peak. This is a smaller, closer counterpart to Gorson Bugyal further along the same ridge system, and while less vast in scale, it delivers a strikingly similar payoff in far less time and effort, making it a popular choice for families, first-time trekkers, or anyone based in Auli for a short stay. A leisurely lunch is typically taken at the meadow's edge, with views stretching across to Dronagiri and the wider Garhwal skyline on clear days, and many visitors simply wander the open grassland photographing the peaks or resting in the sun before beginning the return. The descent retraces the same forest trail, and the entire outing, manageable in half a day at a relaxed pace, remains one of the most efficient ways in this part of Uttarakhand to stand in a genuine high alpine meadow with a major Himalayan peak filling the view, without committing to a multi-day itinerary.
