The road to Gangotri follows the Bhagirathi river for much of its length, and the drive from Dehradun offers a genuinely different character from the Sankri-bound journeys further west, tracking a river considered by Hindu tradition to be the very source of the sacred Ganga. Leaving Dehradun, the route climbs steadily toward Uttarkashi, a substantial town that serves as the region's administrative and spiritual hub, home to the well-known Kashi Vishwanath temple and a busy market where the last significant shopping opportunities before the high mountains present themselves. Beyond Uttarkashi, the road narrows and begins hugging the Bhagirathi's gorge more closely, passing through Bhatwari and Harsil, the latter a picturesque settlement of apple orchards established generations ago and still known for producing some of the finest fruit in the region, its riverside setting genuinely striking regardless of season. The final stretch toward Gangotri tightens further still, the valley walls closing in as deodar forest gives way to increasingly stark, high-altitude terrain, and the temple town itself, when it finally appears, carries a palpable spiritual weight as one of the four key sites in the Char Dham pilgrimage circuit and the closest permanently accessible point to Gangotri glacier, the true source of the Bhagirathi. Kedartal's approach begins from this same pilgrimage town, though the route diverges early from the well-worn Gaumukh trail toward a considerably less-visited, steeper valley leading to the lake itself, and guides use the evening in Gangotri to explain this distinction clearly, along with processing the Forest Department permits required for both routes. A visit to the Gangotri temple itself, dedicated to the goddess Ganga, is a common and meaningful way to close out the day before the trek proper begins.

The trail out of Gangotri follows the Bhagirathi upstream through a landscape that shifts noticeably from the pilgrimage town's temple architecture to genuine high-mountain wilderness within the first few kilometres. Birch forest lines much of the early stretch, its distinctive peeling bark once used, according to local tradition, as writing material for ancient texts, and the trail alternates between shaded forest sections and open, rocky stretches where the gorge narrows and the river's roar becomes a constant companion. Chirbasa, a modest clearing roughly midway through the day, offers a natural rest point and the first proper view up the widening valley toward the peaks framing Gaumukh further ahead, though today's route continues on rather than lingering. This stretch of trail carries genuine pilgrimage significance, since it forms part of the traditional route to Gaumukh, considered the source of the holy Ganga, and sadhus and pilgrims are a common sight, some walking barefoot in a display of devotion that puts the trekking group's modern gear into humbling perspective. As the trail approaches Bhojwasa, the valley opens further, and Shivling's distinctive pyramidal summit, one of the most photographed peaks in the Garhwal Himalaya, comes into clear view for the first time, dominating the skyline ahead with a symmetry that has drawn climbers and pilgrims alike for generations. Bhojwasa itself sits on a relatively flat river terrace, hosting both a small ashram offering basic accommodation and space for tented camps, and the evening light on Shivling from this vantage, catching the peak's ice-streaked face in shifting gold and pink, is one of the trek's genuinely memorable early moments, a preview of the more remote, dramatic terrain still to come toward Kedar Tal.
