Kugti Pass Trek

The approach to Kugti Pass begins in Bharmour, the ancient capital of the Gaddi shepherd community and home to the Chaurasi temple complex, whose eighty-four intricately carved shrines are worth a slow look before the drive onward. A rough dirt road carries the group partway toward Kugti village, after which the trail continues on foot through terraced fields of wheat and potato worked by families whose lives remain closely tied to seasonal herding cycles. The path hugs the contour above the Budhil river for much of the way, and the valley's Gaddi character becomes increasingly apparent in the wool-heavy dress of villagers and the frequent sight of sheep and goat flocks being moved along adjacent slopes. Kugti village itself, the last permanent settlement before the high mountains, sits dramatically above the river gorge and holds deep cultural significance as both a herding hub and a pilgrimage waypoint, since its temple to the local guardian deity is considered essential to visit before any attempt on the pass. Villagers here have crossed Kugti for generations, moving flocks to Lahaul's summer pastures, and their practical knowledge of the route, weather patterns, and river crossing conditions has long informed how outside trekking groups plan the crossing. The guesthouse used for the night is basic but warmly run, typically by a family with generations of connection to the pass, and dinner conversation often turns to changing weather patterns and the shrinking window each year during which the crossing remains safely feasible. Evening light over the Budhil gorge, with the higher peaks beyond Kugti catching the day's last color, offers an early sense of the scale of terrain that lies ahead over the coming days.

Leaving Kugti's fields behind, the trail follows the Budhil river upstream into increasingly wild terrain, the valley narrowing as forest cover shifts from broadleaf species to hardy birch and dense rhododendron thickets, spectacular with bloom in early summer. The path crosses several boulder fields deposited by past flash floods, requiring careful, deliberate footwork, and the river itself remains a constant, roaring presence just below the trail, its glacial-melt water a milky grey-green. Gaddi shepherd families are frequently encountered on this stretch during the trekking season, their flocks spread across the hillside in numbers that can run into the hundreds, and their temporary stone-and-tarpaulin shelters mark informal camps used for generations along this same route. As the valley gains altitude, forest gives way to open, rocky pasture, and the first real sense of the high mountains ahead becomes apparent in the jagged skyline framing the head of the valley. Duggi camp sits on a relatively flat pasture shelf beside the river, chosen for its access to water and its position as a natural staging point before the terrain steepens further toward the pass. Temperatures drop fast here even in peak summer, and evenings often bring a biting wind funneled down from the high ridges above. The guide typically spends the evening explaining acclimatisation strategy for the coming days, since altitude gain from this point onward becomes the trek's central challenge, and reinforces the importance of hydration and pacing given how quickly the terrain moves from pastoral valley to genuine high-mountain conditions.
