Lamkhaga Pass Trek

The Lamkhaga Pass crossing begins with a drive up the Baspa valley from Sangla to Chitkul, widely known as one of the last inhabited villages before the Indo-Tibetan border and a fitting, dramatic starting point for a trek that will carry the group entirely out of Kinnaur and into Uttarakhand over the course of the coming week and a half. Chitkul's wooden houses, carved temple, and terraced fields sit against a backdrop of the Baspa valley's forested slopes, and the village retains a distinctly Kinnauri character in its architecture, dress, and local dialect, details that guides encourage the group to properly observe before the trek moves beyond any permanent settlement for several days. A short acclimatisation walk along the river in the afternoon helps settle the group into the altitude here, already above 11,000 feet, and offers a first look at the ridgeline the trek will eventually cross toward Uttarakhand. This is deliberately an easy first day, focused on final preparation, permit formalities required for crossing between the two states, and a thorough briefing on the ten days ahead, since Lamkhaga is widely regarded as one of the more serious glaciated crossings in this part of the Himalaya, distinct in both route and difficulty from the more commonly referenced Borasu Pass that also connects Kinnaur with Uttarakhand further along the same range. Evening in Chitkul, with temples lit softly against the darkening valley, offers a memorable, unhurried start to a genuinely committing expedition-style trek. Most in the group turn in early, aware that the comfort of a proper guesthouse bed will not be available again for several days.

Leaving Chitkul's fields behind, the trail follows the Baspa's upper tributary into a narrowing valley, the forest here a mix of birch and fir that thins progressively as the route climbs steadily away from the last permanent settlement on this side of the pass. Streams cross the path at regular intervals, their water noticeably colder than anything encountered around Chitkul itself, and the trail, while well defined, sees considerably less regular traffic than the more popular routes elsewhere in Kinnaur, giving the day a quiet, increasingly wild character. Shepherd camps appear occasionally through the first half of the walk, though these thin out as the valley narrows further, and by the time Nalanda camp is reached, set on a grassy shelf beside the stream, the sense of having left inhabited terrain behind entirely is unmistakable. Views back down the valley toward Chitkul, now considerably distant, offer a useful sense of the ground already covered, while ahead the terrain grows visibly starker, hinting at the glacial landscape that will dominate the coming days.
