Surkanda Devi Trek

Surkanda Devi is among the most easily reached high-altitude temples in the Mussoorie-Dhanaulti region, and the climb from Kaddukhal, a small roadside village along the Mussoorie-Chamba highway, packs a genuinely steep two-kilometre ascent into a route most visitors complete comfortably within a single half-day outing. The trail begins immediately on stone-paved steps, a legacy of decades of continuous pilgrim maintenance, climbing through dense oak forest that gives way progressively to rhododendron and finally open ridge scrub as the temple draws closer. Surkanda Devi is one of the significant Shakti Peeth sites in Hindu tradition, believed to mark the spot where Sati's head fell, and the temple's genuine spiritual importance draws a steady stream of pilgrims year-round, particularly during Navratri when the narrow steps can see considerable foot traffic. Small tea and snack stalls line portions of the route, run by local families who have serviced this pilgrim trail for generations, offering rest points that double as good vantage spots for the steadily improving views back over the Doon valley and, on exceptionally clear days, toward the higher snow ranges further north. Reaching the temple itself, perched on a genuinely commanding ridge-top position, rewards the climb with one of the widest panoramic views achievable from any short walk in this immediate region, taking in the Bandarpoonch massif, the Gangotri group, and on the clearest days, a hint of the Nanda Devi range far to the east. After time spent at the temple and its small surrounding shrine complex, the descent back to Kaddukhal retraces the same stone steps, gravity making the return considerably faster than the climb, and most visitors complete the entire round trip comfortably before early afternoon.
