Day-by-day plan for Chamunda Trek
The Chamunda Devi trek is a gentle counterpoint to the high-altitude routes further up the valley, built around a short forested walk above one of Kangra's most visited temples. Starting from the temple complex on the banks of the Baner river, the trail crosses a suspension footbridge before climbing a stepped path into a stand of chir pine that shields the route from direct sun for most of its length. Sadhus and pilgrims are a common sight on the lower stretch, some resting under the pines after visiting the temple, and the atmosphere carries a distinctly devotional character quite different from the more purely scenic trails elsewhere in the region. The path climbs a low, rounded knoll overlooking the temple and the river valley, gaining just enough height to open a genuinely wide panorama: the Dhauladhar's full wall rising abruptly from the Kangra plain, snow visible on its upper reaches for much of the year even when the valley floor is warm and dry. From this vantage, the temple's distinctive golden dome and the terraced fields surrounding it are laid out clearly below, and the Baner river can be traced as a silver thread winding through the valley toward its confluence further downstream. A small clearing near the top of the knoll makes a natural spot to stop for a packed lunch, and langurs are frequently spotted moving through the pines nearby, generally indifferent to visitors. The descent follows the same stepped path back to the temple, and many visitors combine the walk with time spent at the temple itself, taking in the steady stream of devotees and the general bustle of one of the district's most active pilgrimage sites before heading back across the footbridge to the roadside.
