Day-by-day plan for Minkiani Pass Trek
For a trek that will eventually approach one of the Dhauladhar's higher and lesser-visited passes, the opening day is deliberately unhurried, easing the group in with a walk of only moderate length from the roadhead at Ghera. Pack ponies loaded with tents and ration boxes for the coming days set off just ahead of the group, their bells providing an intermittent soundtrack to the first stretch of trail, which follows a broad path above scattered fields of apricot and walnut trees planted generations ago by families still farming the same plots. The Kareri Nallah keeps pace with the trail on the valley floor, its sound a constant low presence even where the path climbs a little distance above the water to skirt a rocky bluff. Wild bee boxes, tended informally by local households, appear fixed to several trailside trees, a small but telling sign of how thoroughly this valley's economy is woven into its forest. As the trail gains a little height, chir pine gives way to deodar, and the first proper views back toward Dharamshala's scattered rooftops open up through gaps in the canopy. Buntings and Himalayan bulbuls flit through the lower branches in numbers, and a resident troop of langurs is often spotted foraging on the forested slope above the trail's midpoint. Kareri village, when it comes into view, sits handsomely on its shelf above the nallah, and the group settles into a homestay for the night, using the relatively short walking day to properly sort gear for the considerably longer and higher stages ahead. The evening briefing here is more detailed than a typical first-night talk, since Minkiani is a genuine pass crossing attempt rather than a simple there-and-back walk, and the guide spends real time confirming that boots, layers, and general fitness are all suited to what follows.

Today's walk follows the same broad drainage used by generations of shepherds heading to high summer pastures, climbing steadily away from Kareri's terraced fields into a valley that narrows and steepens by the hour. Early on, the trail crosses a wide, sun-warmed slab of exposed granite scoured smooth by an ancient glacier, a good spot to notice the deep scratch marks, or striations, left in the rock thousands of years ago. Higher up, deodar forest gives way to birch, and the birch itself thins into scattered, wind-flagged junipers as the valley opens into a series of broad grassy terraces used seasonally by grazing herds. A cold, clear side-stream, distinct from the main Kareri Nallah, cuts across the trail roughly two hours below the lake, and its water, untouched by the greyish glacial silt further up, is treated as the best refill point of the day. As height is gained, the Dhauladhar's ridgeline swings further into view, and for those attempting the Minkiani crossing, this is the first genuine glimpse of the saddle and rock towers that mark the pass, still a full day's walk beyond the lake. Kareri Lake itself, reached by early afternoon, serves here as a waypoint rather than the trek's final destination, and camp is deliberately pitched a little further from the main shoreline than usual, closer to the trail continuing north toward Minkiani, to save time on tomorrow's harder push. The afternoon is used for a shorter acclimatisation walk along the ridge above camp, a standard practice before any pass attempt, and the guide points out the rough line the route will follow the next day. Clouds typically build over the high peaks by late afternoon, and the group settles in early, aware that the coming two days will be markedly more demanding than anything covered so far.
