Dodital's approach begins with a drive to Sangamchatti, a small settlement that serves as the trailhead for this accessible but genuinely scenic short trek, and the road there follows the familiar path through Uttarkashi before branching off along a quieter route that climbs steadily into forested hill country away from the main Bhagirathi valley traffic. Sangamchatti itself, named for its position near the confluence of two mountain streams, offers little beyond a few tea stalls and a trailhead marker, but it functions efficiently as a launch point for the walking portion of the day, which begins almost immediately with a climb through mixed forest toward Agoda. This first walking stretch, while relatively short, introduces the trail's character well, a well-maintained path through oak and pine that climbs steadily without any particularly demanding sections, passing occasional clearings where terraced fields cling to the surrounding slopes. Agoda itself is a modest forest camp rather than a village, chosen for its flat ground and reliable water source, and reaching it with a good portion of the afternoon still remaining allows for a properly relaxed first evening rather than arriving exhausted after a long combined driving and walking day. Guides use this first camp to explain Dodital's particular significance within regional mythology, since the lake ahead is traditionally associated with the birthplace of Lord Ganesha, a detail that adds meaningful cultural weight to what might otherwise be appreciated purely for its scenic value. The forest around Agoda, still relatively low in altitude, supports a noticeably richer variety of birdlife than higher camps further up the trail, and evening walks around the immediate camp area often turn up sightings of various Himalayan pheasant species for those with patience and a keen eye.

The relatively short walk from Agoda to Dodital delivers one of the more understated but genuinely charming payoffs available on any short Uttarakhand trek, a forest-ringed lake that feels almost secretive given how gently the trail reveals it after a morning of climbing through progressively denser oak and rhododendron woodland. The path continues its steady, well-graded ascent from the previous day, rhododendron blooming spectacularly in season and adding vivid colour to what is otherwise a fairly typical mid-elevation Himalayan forest climb. As the trail nears its destination, the forest thins slightly and the ground levels, and Dodital appears with relatively little warning, a still, deep-green lake surrounded almost entirely by dense forest that comes right down to the water's edge in most places, a distinctly different setting from the more open, rock-and-ice framed lakes found higher in the Gangotri or Sankri regions. The lake's association with Lord Ganesha runs deep in local tradition, with some accounts holding that this is where the deity's head was severed and later replaced with that of an elephant in the well-known Hindu legend, and a small temple near the lake's edge draws both pilgrims and trekkers seeking to pay respects. Trout, introduced to the lake decades ago, are visible near the surface on calm days, adding an unexpected touch of activity to the water's otherwise still appearance, and local guides sometimes arrange simple fishing excursions for interested trekkers, subject to appropriate permissions. Accommodation options here include both camping and a small forest rest house, and the relatively developed facilities compared to more remote high-altitude camps reflect Dodital's long-standing popularity as a pilgrimage and short-trek destination even before it became a well-known recreational route.
