Day-by-day plan for Hampta Pass Trek
The Hampta crossing begins with a bumpy but scenic drive out of Manali, the road climbing past Prini and the apple orchards of Sethan before the tarmac finally gives out at Jobra, a scatter of Gaddi shepherd huts that marks the true trailhead. From here the group shoulders daypacks and drops onto a soft forest path running parallel to the Rani Nallah, its glacial water churning white over grey boulders just below the trail. Birch and maple crowd close on both sides, their leaves rustling in a wind that already carries a noticeably sharper edge than the valley floor, and the first hour is as much about settling into rhythm as covering ground. Wild roses and clumps of nettle line the damper stretches near the stream, while higher up the corridor opens briefly onto boulder fields where the group pauses to look back at the receding green folds of the Kullu valley. Chikka, the day's destination, is a broad grassy shelf pinched between the rushing Rani Nallah and a steep forested slope, used for generations as a shepherd halt before the climb toward Balu ka Ghera begins in earnest. Tents go up on flattened ground near the water's edge, and the short distance covered today is entirely deliberate, giving bodies a gentle first taste of altitude before the real gain begins tomorrow. Guides use the afternoon to check gear, redistribute loads if needed, and walk through the week's plan in detail, including how weather on Hampta's exposed pass can shift within hours. As dusk falls, the temperature drops fast enough that down jackets appear at the fire circle, and the sound of the nallah becomes a constant backdrop to a dinner eaten under a sky already noticeably clearer and starrier than in Manali. It is a short day by distance, but an essential one for settling nerves and legs alike before Hampta's more demanding stretches begin.

Leaving Chikka, the trail immediately demands more attention, weaving across a boulder field where the Rani Nallah has scattered rock debris over centuries, and trekkers pick a careful line from stone to stone with poles doing much of the balancing work. Beyond the boulders, the path climbs onto steadily narrowing moraine slopes, the vegetation thinning from birch scrub to low juniper and finally to bare alpine turf as the valley walls close in on either side. Waterfalls drop from hanging side valleys at intervals, some crossed on makeshift log bridges and others requiring a direct wade through icy, ankle-deep water that jolts everyone fully awake regardless of the hour. As the gradient eases in the afternoon, the valley opens into the wide, undulating meadow known as Balu ka Ghera, ringed by rock walls and fed by multiple snowmelt streams that braid across the grass in silver threads. The name, loosely translating to a sandy enclosure, reflects the pale, granular soil visible in patches between tufts of grass, distinct from the darker earth seen lower down the valley. This is one of the most photographed campsites on the entire route, with views back down the valley toward Chikka on one side and, ahead, a first glimpse of the rocky notch that marks Hampta Pass itself. Marmots are frequently spotted darting between rocks near camp, and the cold at this altitude arrives early, well before actual sunset. Guides use the extended evening light to point out the pass's exact line on the ridge above and to brief the group thoroughly on tomorrow's demanding crossing, including pacing strategy and what to expect from the steep final climb. Dinner is eaten quickly tonight, appetite often blunted slightly by the altitude gain, and most trekkers retreat to their tents earlier than the previous night, aware that an early start is essential for the pass crossing ahead.
