Kunal Pathri Trek

Kunal Pathri offers one of the easiest and most accessible short hikes in the immediate vicinity of Dharamshala town, making it a popular choice for visitors without the time or inclination for a multi-day trek. The path begins near the town's upper bazaar area and climbs through a pleasant belt of deodar forest, the trail wide and well maintained given the volume of local visitors it receives, particularly on weekends and during festival periods. Squirrels and a variety of small forest birds are commonly seen darting through the lower canopy, and the relatively gentle gradient makes this a genuinely comfortable walk even for those unused to hill terrain. As the trail nears its destination, it narrows to approach a distinctive rock formation split by a natural fissure, within which sits the small Kunal Pathri shrine, a site local legend connects to the era of the Pandavas and, in some tellings, to a resting place associated with Sita during her forest exile. Whatever the precise legend favoured by a given local guide, the shrine's setting inside the rock cleft gives it a genuinely distinctive character compared to more conventional temple buildings elsewhere in the district. From the small platform just outside the shrine, views open out over Dharamshala's lower town and, on clear days, toward the plains beyond, a satisfying reward for a walk that demands relatively little physical effort. The site rarely feels crowded even when other nearby attractions are busy, and many visitors linger for a while in the cool shade of the rock cleft before making the short, easy descent back through the same deodar forest to town, often timing the return to coincide with lunch at one of Dharamshala's many cafes.
