Day-by-day plan for Jalori Pass Trek
The walk to Jalori Pass is gentle by Himalayan standards, which is exactly what makes it such a popular introduction to high-altitude trekking around Banjar. Starting from the small hamlet of Shoja, with its scattering of wood-and-stone guesthouses and views already stretching toward the Rupi Sarahan range, the route follows a broad, unpaved track that climbs steadily through stands of oak and blue pine. Langurs are commonly spotted moving through the canopy here, and the forest floor is often carpeted with fallen chestnut husks in the autumn months. As the track gains height, the trees begin to thin into open meadow, and the final approach to the pass opens onto rolling grassland dotted with grazing sheep and the occasional shepherd's temporary shelter. Jalori Pass itself, at just over ten thousand feet, is marked by a small temple to the local deity and a scatter of tea stalls run by families from Banjar and Ani who set up seasonal shop here through the summer and autumn trekking months. From the pass, the views are genuinely expansive: the Great Himalayan National Park's outer ridges rise to the north, while to the south the valley falls away toward Banjar and the Tirthan. Many visitors use the pass as a base for a short side walk toward the Raghupur ridge or simply linger over a glass of hot tea while taking in the sweep of the Seraj region's forested hills. The return to Shoja retraces the same track, now downhill and considerably quicker, though the loose gravel surface still calls for sure footing in a few stretches. Because the trailhead is motorable, the pass also sees a stream of day visitors arriving by jeep, giving the walk a sociable, unhurried atmosphere rather than the solitude of deeper wilderness treks. It is an ideal outing for families or first-time trekkers wanting a genuine taste of high meadow scenery without a heavy physical commitment.
