Raghupur Fort Trek Experience

Day-by-day plan for Raghupur Fort Trek
Where the Serolsar trail dips into forest, the walk to Raghupur Fort takes the opposite character, climbing up and along an open ridge that keeps views constantly in play. From Jalori Pass, the trail rises gradually through the last stunted trees before breaking into wide, rolling meadows grazed by sheep through the summer months. Underfoot, the ground is soft with alpine grass and wildflowers in season, including scattered clusters of anemone and potentilla that dot the slopes in July and August. As height is gained, the ridge narrows and the views sharpen: the entire arc of the Seraj region unfolds below, with the Tirthan valley cutting a deep green line to the south and the snow-dusted peaks bordering the Great Himalayan National Park rising to the north. Raghupur Fort itself is less a standing structure than a scatter of weathered stone foundations and low walls at the ridge's high point, believed locally to date back to a defensive outpost from the era of the Kullu rajas, used to monitor movement through the Jalori corridor. Little historical documentation survives, and much of what is known comes from oral accounts passed down in villages like Banjar and Ghiyagi, which lends the ruins an appealingly mysterious quality rather than a tidy museum-piece feel. From the fort's high point, on a clear day, the view extends far enough to pick out distant snow peaks near the Kinnaur border, and the sense of standing on a genuine vantage point once used for exactly that purpose is hard to shake. Trekkers typically spend time here simply absorbing the silence and the scale of the landscape before beginning the return, which follows the same ridge back down to the pass. Because the trail stays almost entirely above the treeline, weather can change quickly, and guides keep a close watch on incoming cloud cover, since the exposed ridge offers little shelter if a storm rolls in.
